Strays formed in the fall of 2016 in the small but notorious music hub of Denton in North Texas with guitarist Ben Copeland, bassist Spencer Jones, and drummer Ben Scott. Initially an instrumental project with a heavy sinister sound, the band has been prolific from their beginnings. In January 2017, the three piece released Smoker, an eerily charged long-range single-track demo produced by Michael Briggs of Denton’s Civil Recording. In the following spring of 2018, Strays returned to Civil Recording and produced their four track EP, Ritual. Interlaced with voice samples from vintage horror and occult films, the EP’s brooding demeanor undoubtedly marks the band’s swing towards a darker, heavier psych sound. During the last half of 2018, Strays took a brief hiatus from live performances and pushed each other into uncharted territory, only to return to the stage and the studio the following spring with indelibly matured and increasingly intricate compositions.

In early 2019 they partnered with Triptych Records to release their debut full length album TIME | DEATH | VOID | DREAM, recorded in April of the same year at both Elmwood Studios (Dallas) and Dojo Baby Studios (Denton) with Brack Cantrell and later mastered by Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Service.  Ben Copeland’s spectral vocals take the listener on an emergent journey carving out an apocalyptic narrative loaded with grit and undoubtedly drug induced. Riding paralyzing drones of assorted origins, Jones’ fuzzed-out, riff-heavy bass parallels Scott’s methodical pounding to create a space that Copeland’s incendiary guitar relentlessly drives and vaporizes. The album is an unholy amalgamation of song and warfare set in an otherworldly battleground with assaults of sound that leave one hollowed.
